This book provides a detailed and thorough summary of the many features of Windows XP. It is by this same author and publisher as the Windows XP Pocket Reference that was reviewed in the April 2003 issue of the BPCA newsletter, but this one expands both the feature descriptions and coverage. This fact filled, 616 page book documents every user program available in XP. Its goal is to summarize all the features and settings, undocumented and otherwise, in a format that provides a picture of what is necessary to understand and complete just about any task.
The book is divided into four parts. Tabs are printed on each page edge throughout the book to help locate the chapters.
In Part II, each alphabetical reference provides a brief definition of the feature, a diagramed list of the steps required to open it, a detailed description including how it works and what can be performed. Notes are frequently included that provide other related information. Where appropriate, figures are shown to illustrate the screen information encountered when accessing the features.
Part III topics are more tutorial. The basics of each subject are discussed and enough details are included to be able to setup a network, know enough about the Registry to do (or not do) the essentials and to consider writing scripts that automate repetitive tasks and more. It is pointed out that this last topic is not for the faint-hearted and more instruction is recommended before undertaking scripting.
This isn't a book you sit down and just read. It's a reference and one I think that is necessary if you endeavor to get full value and enjoyment from Windows XP. I found the format easy to use and the presentations thorough and easy to understand. It quickly exposed many features I didn't know existed or how to access.
