Backup Exec is a software that manages the backup of files, data and complete harddrives to removable media such as tape, CD and CDR/RW, Zip, Jaz and Syquest drives. The File Specification window provides selection of local or network drives. The Veritas web site (www.support.veritas.com) contains a device compatibility list so you can check if your storage device is supported. It works with Windows 98/95 or NT, 16 MB RAM and 10 MB of disk space are required. Most computer stores stock it, cost online at the Veritas site is $69 and a 30-day trial copy can be downloaded. Veritas acquired Backup Exec from Seagate, the producer of fine hard drives and backup tape drives, and it is included with many other tape drive packages.
This version includes a Disaster Recovery feature that can rebuild your system after a crash, using a bootup disk prepared when you first install the application. It has always been a question to me as to how to restore your complete operating system if you can't start the computer. Backup Exec leads you through the process with an extensive Help area and wizards.
The backup process couldn't be simpler. Point and click buttons start the process of backing up selected files or drives, comparison of the backed up data is automatic and a log of the functions are available to be printed or saved. Dialog boxes are available for new and experienced users. A rapid file find aid can be used to locate a particular file for restoration. Backups can be scheduled for unattended procedures when the computer will be idle, or for regular daily, weekly or monthly backups. Backup Exec even features AutoProtect, which knows when to perform Full and Differential backups.
You are given the choice of backing up files in a maximum compressed mode to save space, somewhat compressed to save time, or uncompressed, slower but safer. The optional wizard guides you through the complete backup or restoration process, a great aid to those of us who are nervous about working with drives and files and settings. I have used backup software provided by several tape drive manufacturers but found Backup Exec to be most reliable and easy to use.
