Procomm Plus32 is as its name implies - a 32bit Program for Windows95 or Windows NT, The older Procomm Plus 3, will work in Windows3.x. The integrated Product Rapid Remote is also available as a standalone product, with a caveat that will follow.
I had received a copy of Rapid Remote, a computer remote control program, from Quarterdeck at a reseller's event and had used it to support client's machines.
The purpose of Rapid Remote is to control a computer as if you were in front of it when you are dialing in via a modem, through the Internet, or via a direct connection. It was easy to setup and worked well, fitting on a single disk it made it easy for me to support clients and family via the Internet. I ran into a limitation of the stand-alone copy of Rapid Remote though, it does not support Windows NT based machines. After speaking to Quarterdeck, I found out that the Procomm Plus32 version of Rapid Remote would support Windows NT, so when the chance to review this software came up I jumped at it.
First the installation procedures. Using the CD, you are able to only install the components you may need or the entire package, I did the whole thing, even though I really wanted to control other computers first. I have used the Procomm line for years, in both DOS and Windows environments and found them to be quite good, and eliminating the need for separate programs on my machines. Connecting to BBS's, faxing and such were simple and worked well. I was anticipating the same results.
The Terminal portion of the program still works fine, and is far more powerful than most people may need, but it works great for the simple processes I used it for, downloading and such. Procomm Plus32 also includes an Internet Browser with easy setup features; I tried it but still find that my Windows 95 Dial up networking connections are fine. The browser is not of great use to me, I try to standardize and Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer work just fine. The Faxing from any application works great, easy to use.
Point, Click, Connect - these are the words that describe setting up a session with Procomm Plus32. Whether it is the Internet, faxing, telnet, FTP or E-mail, the package does it all and it installs easy. You can decode E-mail and read it off-line at your convenience.
The last component that I worked with was a bit of a disappointment, Rapid Remote. I tried various configurations and could not get this version to work with a Direct Dial connection. I finally gave up and went back to the "Older Version" and bought a different program for the Windows NT application. I did not try to get hold of Tech support, because I was rushed for time, but I have not given up, I just did not have the time to tweak it so that it would work.
It did uninstall well though, just the rapid remote was removed though. I like things to work out of the box.
Overall I would still recommend this product to the user who needs some of the functions: E-mail, Faxing, FTP Client, and Internet connectivity. The retail price of $179 is even discounted to $149 by Quarterdeck and you can download a trialware demo from their web site, to try this program out first.
